Post-Operative Lymphatic Care

Supporting Your Body Through Recovery

Your body goes through an enormous amount of change following surgery.

Swelling, bruising, tightness and changes in tissue movement can all be part of the healing process. Depending on the procedure, your lymphatic system may also have additional work to do as your body processes fluid and repairs damaged tissues.

Post-operative lymphatic care is about supporting your recovery — not rushing it.

At Embody, treatment is gentle, personalised and adapted to where you are in your healing journey.

Why Does Swelling Occur After Surgery?

Swelling is a normal part of many surgical recoveries.

Surgery creates a controlled injury to the tissues. Your body responds by increasing blood flow and initiating an inflammatory and healing response.

Fluid and other substances move into the surrounding tissues as part of this process.

Your lymphatic system then helps transport excess fluid away.

When tissues have been operated on, however, normal lymphatic pathways can temporarily be disrupted.

This can contribute to post-operative swelling.

Your Lymphatic System After Surgery

The lymphatic system plays an important role in managing fluid within your tissues.

Following surgery, several things can influence lymphatic movement, including:

  • Tissue trauma

  • Inflammation

  • Reduced mobility

  • Disruption of lymphatic vessels

  • Changes in normal tissue movement

  • Scar formation

  • Compression or garments

  • The location and extent of the procedure

Every surgery is different.

So every recovery is different too.

What Can You Notice During Recovery?

Depending on your procedure and stage of healing, you may experience:

  • Swelling

  • Bruising

  • A feeling of heaviness or fullness

  • Tight or restricted tissues

  • Temporary changes in sensation

  • Reduced mobility

  • Areas of tenderness

  • Changes around surgical scars

Some swelling can persist for weeks or longer depending on the procedure.

More swelling doesn't necessarily mean something has gone wrong, but changes that concern you should always be discussed with your surgical or medical team.

When Can I Have Lymphatic Treatment?

There is no universal timeframe that applies to every surgery.

The appropriate timing depends on:

  • The type of surgery

  • How extensive the procedure was

  • Your individual healing

  • Your surgeon's instructions

  • Any complications

  • Your overall health

You must be medically cleared before receiving post-operative lymphatic treatment.

If your surgeon has given you specific instructions regarding massage, lymphatic drainage, movement or compression, those instructions take priority.

At Embody, I will always work within the stage of recovery you are currently in rather than applying a standard treatment protocol.

What Does Post-Operative MLD Feel Like?

Post-operative lymphatic treatment is very different from deep remedial massage.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses gentle, rhythmic techniques designed to support lymphatic fluid movement.

There is no need to aggressively manipulate healing tissues.

Your body has already been through significant physical stress.

Recovery doesn't need to be forced.

Treatment is adapted according to your procedure, healing stage, comfort and medical guidance.

What About Scars?

Scarring is a normal part of the healing process.

As an incision heals, new connective tissue forms and the scar gradually changes.

Once a scar is appropriately healed, specialised hands-on techniques may sometimes be used to support scar mobility and movement of the surrounding tissues.

Scar treatment is not appropriate on fresh or unhealed wounds.

The timing of any scar work will depend on your individual healing and your surgeon's advice.

Post-Operative Care & The Nervous System

Surgery isn't only a physical experience.

It can also be a significant experience for your nervous system.

Pain, anaesthesia, reduced movement, changes to your routine and the emotional experience of surgery can all affect how your body feels during recovery.

This is one reason the Embody approach is deliberately calm.

Breathing, comfortable positioning and gentle touch can help create a treatment environment where you can slow down and allow your body to settle.

We aren't trying to force your body through recovery.

We're supporting it while it does what it already knows how to do — heal.

Movement Is Part Of Recovery

Movement can play an important role in supporting circulation, lymphatic flow and overall recovery.

However, what is appropriate immediately after surgery depends entirely on your procedure and your medical advice.

Your surgeon or healthcare team should guide when and how you return to:

  • Walking

  • Exercise

  • Stretching

  • Strength training

  • Normal daily activities

Never push through restrictions given to you by your medical team.

What About Compression?

Compression garments are commonly recommended following certain procedures.

They may help manage swelling and support the tissues during recovery.

However, compression requirements vary significantly between procedures and individuals.

Your surgeon's instructions should always come first.

If you require specialised medical compression, appropriate fitting by a qualified compression professional is important.

How Embody Can Support Your Recovery

Post-operative lymphatic care at Embody focuses on providing gentle, appropriate lymphatic support during your recovery.

Depending on your stage of healing and individual needs, treatment may include:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage

  • Gentle hands-on techniques

  • Appropriate fascial work when sufficiently healed

  • Breathing techniques

  • Nervous-system regulation

  • Scar-related work when appropriate

  • Education around supporting comfortable movement

Not every technique is appropriate for every client.

Your treatment is guided by your body and your stage of recovery.

When Should You Contact Your Medical Team?

Lymphatic treatment should never replace medical care.

Contact your surgeon or healthcare professional if you experience symptoms that concern you, including sudden or rapidly increasing swelling, significant redness or heat, increasing pain, fever, unusual discharge, wound changes or anything that feels different from your expected recovery.

Seek urgent medical attention for serious symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to see my surgeon before booking?

If your surgery was recent, you should follow your surgeon's instructions regarding when hands-on treatment is appropriate. Medical clearance may be required before your appointment.

Can I have MLD after cosmetic surgery?

MLD may be appropriate following some cosmetic procedures, but timing and technique depend on the procedure and your individual recovery. Your surgeon's clearance is essential.

Will MLD remove my swelling immediately?

MLD isn't designed to force swelling away. Recovery takes time, and the response to treatment varies between individuals.

Can you work directly over my surgical site?

Only when it is appropriate for your stage of healing. Fresh wounds, incisions and healing tissues require particular care and will not be treated inappropriately.

Can post-operative lymphatic care replace compression?

No. Where compression has been prescribed, it remains an important part of your recovery plan. MLD and compression can have different roles.

Your Recovery Isn't A Race

There can be a lot of pressure after surgery to look “normal” as quickly as possible.

But healing takes time.

Your body is doing complex work beneath the surface — repairing tissues, managing inflammation, creating new connective tissue and gradually restoring movement.

Give it time.

Give it support.

And let recovery happen at its own pace.

Embody Post-Operative Lymphatic Care is designed to support your body through that process — gently, thoughtfully and within the guidance of your medical team.
